  • 2, 3 - Harold Pinter's Betrayal
    8 pm, Johns Auditorium, Hampden-Sydney College:
    The Department of Fine Arts presents this masterpiece of contemporary theatre as its Spring offering. Pinter's reverse chronology of an affair exposes dishonesty and articulates the intricacies of love in the modern world.


  • 4 - Paul Rolling, tenor, in concert
    8 pm, Crawley Forum, Hampden-Sydney College:
    An exciting evening of arias and spirituals by a native of Washington, D.C., who is now living in our area. Mr. Rolling has sung as soloist in churches and with many choral groups in the nation's capital, and has appeared on radio and NBC television. He has made ten tours to Japan, most lasting six weeks or more. This concert is co-sponsored by the Department of Fine Arts at Hampden-Sydney College.


  • 8 - Loumbrozo-Goldina piano duo
    8 pm, Crawley Forum, Hampden-Sydney College:
    Pianists Remy Loumbrozo and Arianna Goldina in concert. Free.


  • 9, 10, 16, 17 - I Hate Hamlet
    8 pm, Waterworks Theater:
    A young TV actor is engaged to play Hamlet at the festival in Central Park. He rents an apartment that was once owned by John Barrymore. A seance, run by his real estate agent, his agent, and his girl friend produced John Barrymore who helps him prepare for the role. What ensues is funny, exciting, and tender. Players include Jon Carwile as Andrew, the TV Actor, Chris Brochon as Barrymore, Donna Smith as the real estate agent, Jamie Abbott as Dierdre, Andrew's girl friend, Phyllis Stafford as the agent who "knew" Barrymore, and Michael Garrett as the Hollywood director who tries to get Andrew back to Hollywood. Robbie Winston, Longwood graduate and fight master choreographed the fight scene that ends the first act. Reservations call 392-3452

    The poet and novelist will read from his works to honor the 25th anniversary of The Hampden-Sydney Poetry Review.

  • 1 - Anita Holloway, Artist, Mother, Queen, and Wife: Women in African Art
    2:30 pm, Bedford Auditorium, Longwood College:
    Throughout history, African women have been creators, nurturers, healers, leaders, and wives. Using objects from the African collection at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Ms. Holloway will demonstrate how women have shaped the social, economic, political, and spiritual destinies of their society.


  • 4 - Amsterdam Guitar Trio
    8 pm, Crawley Forum, Hampden-Sydney College:
    One of the very finest guitar ensembles in the world (Gramophone Magazine). Both audacious and charming (Los Angeles Times).


  • 16 - Ira Sadoff Poetry Reading
    7:30 pm, Parents & Friends, Hampden-Sydney College:
    Ira Sadoff, Dana Professor of Poetry at Colby College, has written eight books of poetry and publishes poetry and fiction in many journals. His controversial critical essays help define the terrain of contemporary poetry.


  • 17 - Wilson Fellow Tanya Melich

    Tanya Melich, president of Political Issues Management, New York, is a Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellow.


  • 19 - Nietzsche Mini-Symposium
    4:30 & 8 pm, Parents & Friends, Hampden-Sydney College:
    Topflight scholars Rex Schacht and Richard Welshon will help explain the enigmatic, provocative, and controversial thinker.


  • 21 - Sally Bowring, Workshop: Drawing out of the Box
    10 am-3 pm, Longwood Center for the Visual Arts:
    Ms. Bowring will teach participants how to explore the possibilities of non-traditional drawing materials. Students will focus on drawing one object or image many times, seeing how different media, materials, and drawing surfaces affect the result.
    Fees: $5 members and students; $10 non-members.

  • 12 - Workshop: Children's Acting Class
    (time to be announced), Waterworks Players Theater
    This intensive and lively three-hour workshop, led by the staff of the School of the Performing Arts in the Richmond Community (SPARC), is designed for young people in grades 3-5.
    Fees: $10 for children of members; $15 for children of non-members.

    Come check out the artwork that will hang during the Hampden-Sydney Music Festival and Alumni College, through June 4.
