The Longwood Center for the Visual Arts

[Longwood Center for the Visual Arts Illustration] The Longwood Center for the Visual Arts (LCVA) is the art museum of Longwood College and a comprehensive arts facility committed to academic and public outreach. The LCVA is common ground upon which students, faculty, community volunteers, schools and organizations work together to enhance the cultural offerings of the College, the Southside region, and the Commonwealth of Virginia. The LCVA combines art education, exhibitions, and community-based events in an 11,000 square-foot facility located on the corner of Main and Third Streets in historic downtown Farmville.

[Longwood Center for the Visual Arts Illustration] Acquisitions and collections focus on Virginia Contemporary Arts and Crafts and 19 Century American Art. Additional art objects from around the world are collected and maintained in the Study Collection to enhance the academic environment and support classroom teaching in the arts. In addition to exhibiting work from its permanent collection, the LCVA presents an ongoing schedule of changing exhibitions accompanied by related publications and educational programs.

Each year the LCVA presents over twenty exhibitions drawn from both its own collections and from other sources. General exhibitions are used to support educational activities at Longwood and at regional schools. Special exhibitions are used to promote Virginia artists and to support faculty initiatives and special campus-wide interpretive themes of an inter-disciplinary nature.

The LCVA contributes to number community programs including two outreach programs with the Prince Edward County Schools, the Art Print and Art for Students-at-Risk programs. In addition to lectures and workshops related to special exhibitions, the center presents a monthly Art for Lunch series of talks and has an active tour program. The LCVA is host to a year-round Community Art School that presents a wide variety of classes for children and adults. The annual Children's Earth Day Arts Festival and Community Achievements in the Arts Awards are projects of the Members Council of the LCVA.
