Assignment 8 -- Field Report

In preparation for this assignment, read chapter 14 in your textbook, "Writing Brief Reports."

On your campus or at your place of employment, select a location to conduct a field examination that will include conclusions and recommendations based on your evaluation of the efficiency or safety of the location. Suggested fields to investigate are

On Campus

parking-lot layout	snack bar food arrangements
classroom layout	registration procedures
recreational areas	library study-carrel layout
campus bookstore layout	q piece of equipment
a small structure	laboratory layout

At Work

room furnishings	office layout
restroom facilities	lounge or coffee room
locker space	emergency exit doors/stairwells
storeroom arrangements	a piece of equipment
security arrangements	parking-lot layout

Your field report should include the following sections:

Essential background data
Explain what is being investigated and for what purpose (safety or health factors, cost determination, need for improvement, validity of claims, etc.).
Account of the field inspection
Clarify what the field investigation found.
Analysis of findings
Interpret the significance of the findings as related to the purpose of the investigation.
Conclusions and recommendations
Detail what action should be taken.

Your field report should be at least 500 words long. There is no limit on length, but all essays should be concise, informative, and correct. Longer essays that multiply errors simply provide more justification for a poor grade. Microsoft Word will tell you how many words there are in a document.
