Make Up Work Directions

Although I am using the Internet to organize and present course materials, this is not an Internet course as such this semester, 1998. Regular class meetings are scheduled and you are expected to attend and to participate in class activities. However, when it is not possible for you to attend class, you are expected to do the Make Up Work assignments which is posted on the class syllabus.

The make up work assignments involve reading essays, stories, poems, or plays from Literature for Composition or the chapters from Mythology and then responding to a question which is given in the discussion forum entitled "Make Up Work." This forum is listed following the discussion forms for the weekly journal assignments.

For your make up assignments, follow the process described in the Journal Directions.

Make up work will affect your grade. Remember that your regular journal grade will be computed by dividing the number of journals you actually write into the number which are required. So, if 39 journals are required and you write 39, the division will yield 1, or a grade of 100, a perfect "A." Anything less than 39 journals will result in a grade less than 100. Remember also that "A," "B," "C," "D," and "F" grades are given on a ten point scale.

So, if you miss a class, you must write one make up journal in addition to the original number of 39 journals making the total number of journals you must write 40. Anything less than 40 journals will result in a grade less than 100.

The make up work is intended to encourage you to attend class regularly as well as to give you the opportunity to practice your reading and writing skills on those occasions when you are not able to attend.

Make up work will be evaluated in the same way that your weekly journals will be evaluated. If you do not do the required reading, do not understand it, or do not express your ideas in a coherent way, you will not be given credit for the work.

Make up journals will be handed in each week along with your regular journals but must be clearly marked at the top "Make Up Work."
